Like many institutions this year, Red Oak was affected by the financial challenges of 2008 and 2009. But that didn't stop us from providing hundreds of boys and girls a summer of memorable and challenging activities at Red Oak, Red Barn and Chincapin - from archery to horseback riding to our exciting outdoor challenge course and zip line!

As always there was canoeing, backpacking and climbing, and J Bones and Michael Schwartz stories by the campfire.

We continue these traditions thanks to our stalwart donors, who, in addition to their normal giving, responded with an outpouring of generosity in memory of our friend and Board President T.J. Dorr. And thanks to a group of independent donors, Red Oak received a new stove for the lodge.

We are also indebted to our camp parents who, despite struggling with personal financial challenges, chose the value of camp over other optional summer expenses. Our parents recognize the value of the camp experience as an investment in their children.

2010 will be just as challenging, and tuition alone cannot cover all of our operational expenses.  To ensure the safety of our campers and protect our assets, we need the following:

  • A new suction release pool pump at the Chincapin pool, to ensure compliance with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act. The estimated cost is $4,325.00.

  • New shingles on the Ken Roskos Science Center, built in 1968.  The estimated cost is $3,800.00.

These expenses are in addition to  other pending projects that still need to be completed, such as resurfacing the Red Barn tennis court and purchasing a new van.
