The Red Oak Program offers an opportunity for older campers to push themselves, learn new skills, and be a mentor for younger campers.

Red Oak campers have a chance to be overnight campers, and master the many outdoor activities offered at Red Barn and Chincapin. They are mentored by our senior staff, learning how to be leaders and are schooled in camping and camp traditions. Red Oak campers also take on certain responsibilities, like leading some activities for younger campers.

With this combination of learning, hard work and fun campers in the Red Oak program spend the summer building friendships and developing leadership skills that will serve them well in high school, college, and beyond. These include:

  • Understanding and Managing Group Dynamics

  • How to Resolve Conflict

  • Planning Educational Lessons

  • How to Effectively Lead a Group

  • How to Be a Responsible Employee

A unique opportunity offered to our older campers is the Red Oak Resident Session. We offer two sessions, one for boys and one for girls. During this 14 day session the campers will focus on certain skills such as outdoor cooking, rock climbing, how to pack for a multi day backpacking trip and much more. These skills will be learned in camp, on short day trips rock climbing at Whipp's Ledges in Hinckley or an overnight backpacking trip in the Holden Arboretum. Then the experience will culminate with a multi-day adventure. This is the ultimate camp experience!
