Program Overview

Red Oak's Water Rocks Trails is a series of residence/trip camp for boys and girls ages 11 to 14. This program provides a fun, outdoor adventure experience that promotes growth, responsibility, and a solid work ethic. Campers are challenged to work together, develop outdoor leadership skills, practice eco friendly camping, and function autonomously as they embark on short climbing, canoeing, or backpacking trips, depending on the selected session.   Campers also get a chance to do many of the activities available to our Red Barn day campers, from activities at the lake to tennis and archery.

In 2012 Red Oak will be offering two 13-day sessions.  The program is designed so campers can participate in one or more sessions.  Each session will include a Trails component, so that campers are taught general backpacking skills, including outdoor cooking, trip preparation and packing, orienteering, and low impact camping skills.

Campers also acquire and practice skills related to the session’s theme.  For example, for Water, there is an emphasis on watercraft skills and safety.  These skills are practiced in camp and in local wilderness areas before venturing deeper into the backcountry.

But that's not all!  Campers will have plenty of time during the day to choose from open activities available to our Red Barn campers, including archery, canoeing, firebuilding and outdoor cooking, fishing, field games, tennis, swimming, riflery, science and nature studies, and woodshop.

Campers will also participate in activities and games that teach leadership, cooperation and communication.

Enrollment: 13 to 20 campers per session

Tuition: $1,400 per session.

Session 1, Water - June 11-June 23

This session is focused on canoeing, which allows a camper relatively easy access deep into natural areas.  Campers will learn all the strokes and skills needed in canoeing, from flat water to whitewater.  A trip to the Grand River in Ashtabula County offers a chance to practice on moving water.  Additionally, the camp will spend a day at Lake Erie practicing open water skills.  The campers will be exposed to a number of different watercraft, but the focus will be on canoeing.  This will prepare them for a four to five day canoe trip.  The location will depend on river conditions, but will be within a five hour drive from camp.  Last year, Red Oak went to the Pine River in Michigan.

Rocks - July 9-July 21

This session focuses on all aspects of climbing.  Campers will learn knots, belaying, climbing, rappelling, and more.  We have both indoor and outdoor climbing walls, along with a twenty element high ropes course and zip line.

A trip to Whipps Ledges in the nearby Hinkley Reservation will give the campers a chance to experience climbing on natural formations.

This session culminates with a five-day trip to Seneca Rocks, West Virginia, to utilize the skill learned at camp, climbing to the summit.

Trails

Both the Water and Rocks Camp Sessions will include backpacking skills.  Campers will learn minimum-impact camping skills, how to plan and cook on the trail, orienteering, and how to pack.

A two night backpacking trip in the Holden Arboretum gives the campers the chance get used to camping and an opportunity to see natural areas rarely accessed.
